The Chattahoochee Baptist Association is a cooperating fellowship of 70 Baptist churches and missions.  Most of these are located in Hall County, Georgia, but we also have a number of churches in our bordering counties:  Banks, Dawson, Forsyth, Jackson and Lumpkin.  Hall County is located about 50 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.  Gainesville is the county seat.

A Brief Historical Note

The Chattahoochee Baptist Association was organized at the Hopewell Baptist Church, Hall County, Georgia, on Saturday, March 4, 1826.  There were nine charter member churches.  These transferred from the Tugalo, Yellow River and Sarepta Association to comprise the new Association.  The session for organizing did not conclude until Monday afternoon, March 6, 1826.  This Association of churches has fellowshipped, witnessed and worked together continually for God’s glory since that time.

The name “Chattahoochee” is taken from the Chattahoochee River, which flows through the area and is the primary source of water for Lake Sidney Lanier.  “Chattahoochee” is an American Creek Indian word that means “picture rock”.  The poet, Sidney Lanier, was so enthralled with the picturesque river he enshrined it in American literature with his famous poem, The Song of the Chattahoochee.  When the U.S. Corps of Engineers built a dam across the river just above Buford, Georgia, in the early 1950’s, the  lake formed was named for the distinguished poet.

Our Associational Area

Our geographical area lies in one of the most beautiful sections of Georgia.  Beautiful Lake Sidney Lanier lies in its heart, and we are blessed to enjoy everything from the island of the south to the highlands of the lower Appalachian Mountains to the north.

We also enjoy a very diversified population and economy.  We live in a high growth area.  Truly, the world is coming to our door.  Many are coming to escape urbanism, but some are coming to take advantage of work and cultural opportunities.  We have three colleges and a technical school, tremendous park, recreational and leisure services, highly recognized theatre programs and other outstanding cultural events.  The Atlanta Falcons, NFL professional football team has recently moved its headquarters and training facility to our area.  Because of  our proximity to Atlanta, Athens, Dahlonega and significant centers of education, we are able to enjoy many other opportunities for recreation and cultural enrichment.  Our unemployment rate is among the lowest in Georgia.  At the heart of our industrial strength is the poultry industry.  Gainesville is known as “the poultry capital of the world!” We have one of the finest medical communities of any area of comparable size in the United States.  We are blessed!  We know it, and we are most grateful.

Consequently, our churches have greater opportunities than ever to be on “the cutting edge”  of evangelism, missions and ministry.  Most churches are experiencing steady growth in all areas of the expanding church programs.

We have every reason, under divine leadership, to have great hope for the work of God’s Kingdom through our churches in our area.
